How do I know when my BMW needs an oil change?

If you are the proud owner, then you know that it is crucial to keep up with the regular maintenance schedule. One of the most important tasks on this schedule is getting your oil changed.

Is It Time?

The answer is actually quite simple – just follow the recommended service intervals in your owner’s manual! However, if your engine is louder than normal when driving or when it first starts up, the oil may be too old and will need to be changed. Another easy way to tell if your engine needs an oil change is if you are experiencing “sputtering performance.” Also, if your BMW is equipped with the latest iDrive System, scroll to Vehicle Information on the main screen, then -> Vehicle status -> Service Required. From there you will find information about your oil and many other service-related items.

Oil Life By The Mile

It is important to keep in mind that not all BMW service intervals are the same. For example, if you drive a 2009 or an older model, the oil change interval is every 15,000 miles OR 12 months, whichever comes first. If you have a 2010-2012 model year car, then your recommended service interval for an oil change is every 12,000 miles OR 12 months. And for 2013 and newer model year vehicles, the service interval is every 15,000 miles OR 18 months.
